Stay Charged on Your Trip with the Gameboy Micro Starter Pack

While the Gameboy Micro has impressed many with its crisp, well-lit screen and sleek convenient design, it still has the issue that all portable systems have – needing to be recharged regularly. Without a removable battery pack, the Gameboy Micro has to be plugged into its recharger every time that you want to power it up, and while the battery life is considerably long for daily travels it can suddenly run out while on holiday or in the middle of a long car trip.

The Gameboy Micro Starter Pack protects you from running out of battery power while in the car by giving you a car charging cable. Like other charging devices for the car, this plugs into the cigarette lighter and draws its energy from the current running through the heating element, making it as easy to charge your Gameboy Micro in the car as it is to charge it at home – even easier, as the charging cable makes it easy to continue playing uninterrupted while sitting in the front passenger seat.

The Gameboy Micro Starter Pack also includes various other accessories which make it easier for you to play your Gameboy Micro while you are traveling, such as a pair of earphones with a volume control, a pair of cartridge cases the right size for Gameboy Advance / Gameboy Micro games, a strap case for the Gameboy Micro and a cleaning cloth to keep the front of the Gameboy Micro shiny and easy to see.

This great set of Gameboy accessories let you enjoy your Gameboy Micro on the go so that you can leave any time on a car trip or other vacation without worrying about whether the Gameboy Micro is charged, and they keep the Gameboy Micro and your games in the best possible condition while traveling!

Getting the Best FPS Control on the 360 with the XFPS Pro 3.0 Sniper Plus

When the Next Generation game industry blog listed their Top 50 Innovations in the world of video gaming, one of the control type innovations that they included was the mouse + WASD key setup for playing first person shooters. Developed first in the days of such seminal first person shooters as Quake, the combination of the mouse for precision aiming and the WASD keys for strafing while moving precise distances (and being able to stop as quickly as one moves) gave Deathmatch players a clear control advantage.

Almost two decades later, the combination of the mouse and keyboard still beats any other method of control for moving quickly and precisely around a fast paced 3D environment, and with the XFPS Pro Sniper Plus Adapter you can use this method of control with all of your Xbox 360 first person shooters!

The XFPS Pro Sniper Plus Adapter lets you map the analog sticks to the keys of almost any kind of keyboard (around ninety five percent of all keyboards are supported, so unless you have some sort of really old keyboard there should be no problem getting it to work). Not only the analog sticks, but also all of the buttons on the controller can be mapped to whichever keys you want – make the fire button correspond to the left ctrl key, the jump button correspond to the space bar, etc.

With the XFPS Pro Sniper Plus Adapter you can use the exact same controls that you are used to with first person shooters on your PC with any of the games that you play on the Xbox 360. Excellent sensitivity and compatibility make this mouse and keyboard adapter one of the best ways to get the control that you need to be the best when playing Xbox 360 FPS games!

How to Setup the LCD Topgun

The LCD Topgun is a great light gun which is designed to work with all recent game systems and all displays. With one attractive baretta shaped light gun you can play light gun games on the PS2, Xbox and PS3. It comes with a USB connection so that when light gun games start coming out for the Xbox 360 it will probably be compatible with that as well, and you can even use the LCD Topgun to play light gun games on the PC when you emulate old arcade gun games with MAME. Compatibility is the top reason to use the LCD Topgun, with the light gun being compatible with 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p resolutions for LCD TVs, plasma TVs, DLP TVs – even projectors!

To set up the LCD Topgun, you simply attach the sensor bars to the top/bottom or both sides of your screen. In the case of a particularly large screen (of sixty inches or more), you will need the special Blaze stand. This sensor bar works essentially the same way that the sensor bar on the Wii does – technically the bar is not the sensor: while TV light gun sensors in the past were devices which sat on top of the TV and tried to locate a light gun beam, the Wii style bar emits a row of positioning lights which are picked up by the LCD Topgun and used to triangulate the gun’s position – all of which happens seamlessly and automatically.

So simply set up the LCD Topgun’s sensor bar stand on top of your TV screen, plug in the LCD Topgun and calibrate, and there you go - you are now ready to play any of your favorite light gun games from a wide variety of systems on any kind of display that you have!

The Difference in Speed Between the US Wii and the UK Wii

3D graphics processing hardware is not the only thing that determines the speed of a system. The local system for displaying a television signal has an influence as well – while the United States uses the NTSC system with a refresh rate of 60 Hz (meaning that the image on the screen is refreshed 60 times a second, the United Kingdom uses the PAL system; while the PAL system has somewhat better image quality and color, it refreshes the screen at a rate of 50 Hz.

What this means for speed is that if the speed of a game is tied to the number of times that the screen is updated per second, there can be a slight speed difference between what is displayed on NTSC versus what is displayed on PAL. The system may also be able to play games at both refresh rates – for example with the United Kingdom version of the Wii, you can play games in both NTSC and PAL. UK Wii games run at 60 Hz, but when you play games on the Virtual Console with the UK Wii they run at 50 Hz.

Playing games that were designed for one display system on another may mean that they have to be played with a black border at the top and bottom of the display to fit them to the resolution of a different kind of screen. The USA version of the Wii and the United Kingdom version of the Wii also have somewhat different compatibility with old Gamecube games – while the USA Wii is generally unable to play PAL Gamecube games, the PAL Wii in the UK tends to play all of the compatible Gamecube games, although the frame rate may be lower by a factor of 1.2.

Have you noticed any difference playing VC games on the UK Wii? Let us know!

Powering a USA NTSC Xbox 360 with a UK Power Supply

If you have both the USA version of the Xbox 360 and the UK version, you may be wondering what the difference is between the two power supplies and if it is possible to use one power supply with the other. After all, there are only a limited amount of outlets on your power bar and if you can save space with only one power supply then it’s all the better. Also, if you intend to import an American 360, you can grab a UK power supply to use with it.

While the power bricks for the USA Xbox 360 and UK Xbox 360 have different numbers written on them, users have reported that the UK power supply will work just fine with the USA Xbox 360 as is. Considering that the plugs are the same and recognizing the possibility for confusion, Microsoft had the foresight to design the power supply so that it can be used as is. The power brick itself is set to the region's voltage, so if you're in the UK you can power a USA XBox 3 with the 220V UK power brick.

This is great news, considering the fact that voltage converters tend to be expensive and the power results can still turn out to be a little irregular. It’s also great news in that you only need plug in a single power supply if you own both region's Xbox 360s, and you do not need to spend nearly as much time crawling around behind your home entertainment system to keep your game consoles powered up!

How to Use the Same Gamertag on Two Xbox 360s

Do you have two Xbox 360s in the house, and wish that you could use the same Gamertag on one or the other? Want to be able to log into Xbox Live with your Gamertag when you are over at a friend’s house or using someone else’s system on the go? There is an easy way that you can share Gamertags between Xbox 360s – by doing this you can log onto Xbox Live normally, access your friends list and work on your achievements no matter what Xbox you're playing on!

The basic way to use a Gamertag on a different Xbox 360 is to go through the Xbox Live blade on the Xbox 360 dashboard, choose the “recover Gamertag” option, and fill out your Gamertag email address and password which will make the Xbox 360 you are currently playing on, the official Xbox 360 for using that Gamertag. The system is set up to make it so that a Gamertag is normally only associated with one particular Xbox 360. This way, you'll even be able to use spend your Xbox points on the new machine!

An even easier way that you can use your Gamertag on a variety of systems (especially if you're lucky enough to have two machines in the same house) is to simply copy the Gamertag info from the hard drive of your Xbox 360 at home onto a memory card, take it with you, and put the files on the hard drive of whatever Xbox 360 you are currently playing.

To do this, go through the System blade on the Xbox 360 dashboard. Choose the memory menu, then the hard drive, and then go to the Gamertag directory. From here you can easily copy your Gamertags to a plugged in USB memory card. Just do the opposite process to copy files onto a different Xbox 360 and you can use the same Gamertag files on any Xbox 360 that you want without having to spend time and identify yourself for the Gamertag recovery process!

Have you done this? Leave a comment and let us know!

Using RGB Scart on the SNES, N64 and Gamecube

If you are trying to get the best picture possible from your SNES, N64 or Gamecube, using an RGB Scart cable is the best quality solution. The resolution and clarity that you get with the RGB Scart cable is much better than S-Video or standard AV, however there are some compatibility issues.

Nintendo has engineered some of their systems so that RGB output is restricted. Here are the basics on which systems restrict RGB Scart output, and of those which ones can be upgraded or modified to use RGB Scart.

The SNES, N64 and Gamecube all come in two versions: the USA / JAP version which is designed to work with NTSC style television signals, and the PAL version which is used throughout Europe and other locations where the PAL standard is followed. If you have a SNES which is USA / JAP, or a Gamecube which is PAL, you will be able to get RGB Scart output simply by getting an inexpensive RGB Scart cable to plug in.

If, on the other hand, you have a SNES from the PAL region, the cables will need to be modified before it will work. It’s a fairly simple modification that just requires soldering out some resistors.

With a USA / JAP N64, you will need the console itself modified to work with the RGB Scart cable. This is a lot trickier and we advise only the experienced to go down this route. A PAL N64 cannot be modified to work with the RGB Scart cable.

Surprisingly, Nintendo of Europe gave us UK gamers a break, as PAL ‘cubes require no modifications to work with RGB Scarts straight out the box. However, if you own a Gamecube from the USA / JAP region, there’s a cable mod that can be performed to enable RGB.

N64 Goldeneye Homebrew on the Nintendo Wii

The Virtual Console system on the Nintendo Wii has become one of the most popular features of the machine among retro gamers – recent hacks using the Virtual Console feature of the Wii have brought classic N64 games such as Mario 64 to the Wii even though they are not yet available over Nintendo’s online download service.

One of the latest hacks to appear for the Virtual Console is a homebrew version of Goldeneye! This hack is similar to other N64 hacks on the Virtual Console in that it essentially replaces an existing Virtual Console game – in this case, the game appears to be Sin and Punishment – with the emulator code and rom for an N64 game. A relatively new trick with this one is that the title that the Wii console displays for the game has also been edited to reflect Goldeneye instead of Sin & Punishment.

As can be seen from watching the videos of this Goldeneye hack, there are still some issues with frame rates – about every fifteen or twenty seconds there’s a slight jump in the frame rate and sound emulation, but with better N64 emulation on the Virtual Console being developed and Virtual Console hackers learning new tricks all the time, it’s only a matter of time before the Nintendo Wii gets a seamless Goldeneye homebrew.

With all of the excitement that the videos online have drummed up for this classic first person shooter, let’s hope that Nintendo picks up on it and comes out with an official Virtual Console release. Preferably, a Virtual Console version of Goldeneye which lets us play the beloved multiplayer mode over the Wii’s network connection! Such a game, if indeed it is released, would be sure to quickly turn into one of the best sellers on the Nintendo Wii’s revolutionary Virtual Console.

You can get this and loads more hacks up and running with the USB Gecko.

Have you done anything interesting while hacking the Wii? Leave a comment and let us know!

Use Your Own Pictures as Backgrounds on the PS3

You can use any picture that you want for your background image on the Playstation 3, and setting up a custom background is very easy to do. First, download the image that you want to your PS3. There are a couple ways to do this – you can download a picture from the Internet Browser, get a picture sent to you from a friend using the Playstation 3’s messaging feature, or you can upload the image direct from a digital camera or a memory card.

Next, you should go to the Main Menu of the Playstation 3, find the image that you want to use as your Playstation 3 background, and select it by pressing the triangle button. A menu will come up with options – choose “View” to see the image in full screen mode. Press the triangle button again for a list of controls. By scrolling to the right you will find the “Set As Wallpaper” option.

Press X and choose “Set As Wallpaper”. From there you will be able to calibrate the image so that it is set on the screen the way that you want it. With the right joystick on the PS3 gamepad you can resize the image. Try to fit it in the box which appears on the screen (this represents the full screen of the PS3). Once the size is right press X again to confirm. You may be prompted if you want to overwrite your current wallpaper – just say yes and replace it.

That’s all that it takes! With the “Theme Settings” menu on your Playstation 3 you can turn your custom wallpaper on and off, and you can change the background of your Playstation 3’s menus as many times as you want with any image from the internet, your digital camera or your computer for a personalized PS3 experience.
