The Wii LAN Adapter Will Improve Your Online Gaming Experience

To welcome all players to the new age of gaming, consoles such as the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii are fully equipped with a built-in wireless network adapter to get you started in wireless gaming without an added charge. However, not everyone that games plays through a wireless network. If you fit into that category, then you can invest in a wired connection to get you hooked up to online gaming!

We added the Wii LAN adapter, which is a wired RJ45-USB Network Add-On. With this adapter, you can connect your Nintendo Wii console to the internet through a cable connection. This is a great way to play games online without having to invest in a wireless router. Just connect the adapter to a free USB 2.0 port on your Wii, then connect it to a free port – it’s as easy as that!

There are many pros to dropping £13.49 for the Wii LAN adapter. First off, you won’t have to spend some big bucks on an expensive router that must be compatible with your computer and has a wide enough range to deliver high speeds wirelessly to various locations in your house (especially through all the walls and corners – if your game room is on the opposite side of the house). It is also much more efficient in obtaining higher game speeds, so you will experience less lag and disconnections. Lastly, you can just plug-and-play, no need to complete a wireless configuration!

This is one of the best investments for those looking to play their best game online without having to put a huge dent in their pockets. If you’re looking to go back to wired gaming, add the Wii LAN adapter to your cart for only £13.49!

Load The Homebrew Channel Using The Twilight Hack

Hey Game Train readers! Are you lookin’ for a free way to load homebrew on your Wii? Then you have come to the right place! This thread has been designed to allow you to load The Homebrew Channel on your unmodded Wii using the Twilight Hack.

The Twilight Hack works by playing a hacked save file for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which launches homebrew from an SD card. The Homebrew Channel will allow you to launch Wii homebrew applications without the need to re-run the Twilight Hack. It also lists applications that are stored on the SD card, making it much easier to load homebrew on your Wii!

So let’s get started! You will need the following items before you begin:

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess game (which you’ve played at least once)
  2. An SD card
  3. An SD card reader
  4. The Twilight Hack*
  5. The Homebrew Channel

* This version works with the latest Wii firmware update 3.3!

To begin installation, you will need to follow these directions:

  1. Insert the SD card to your computer.
  2. Copy the ‘private’ directory from the Twilight Hack download (linked above).
  3. Transfer the homebrew Wii executable file (*.elf or *.dol) to the root directory of the SD card as ‘boot.elf’ or ‘boot.dol’ accordingly from the Homebrew Channel linked above.
  4. Create and store applications in a separate folder entitled, ‘apps’.
  5. Insert the SD card into your Wii.
  6. Turn on your console and go along the following path: Wii Options > Data Management > Save Data > Wii
  7. Locate your Zelda game save and erase the file.
  8. Open your SD card and copy the ‘Twilight Hack’ file that matches your game region.
  9. Exit the menu.
  10. If you are in the American region, identify if the inner circle text of your game disc ends in a 0 or a 2, otherwise, proceed to the following step.
  11. Insert The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess game disc and run the game. When prompted to load, choose ‘Twilight Hack 0’ or ‘Twilight Hack 2’ if you are in the American region based on the last digit of the inner circle text. Otherwise, load the ‘Twilight Hack’ file.
  12. When the game loads, walk backwards or talk to the person standing in front of you and the game will appear to crash.
  13. Wait until you are presented with the Homebrew Channel installation information and press 1 to complete installation.
  14. After resetting your console, load The Homebrew Channel and enjoy!

Those of you gamers who already own a Wii can agree that the positioning of the sensor bar is the most vital aspect of having smooth gameplay on your Wii. Mounting the sensor bar can be tricky with the variety of television shapes, sizes, and placements out there – one of the most difficult being large projection screens. Rock Out with the Wii Dragon Wireless Guitar

The Wii Dragon Wireless Guitar has a number of great features which make it one of the most attractive guitar controllers for the Wii, particularly if you have little gamers as well as bigger gamers in your family. As a wireless guitar controller, the Wii Dragon is easy to play on your feet without getting tangled up. Easy compatibility with all of the Guitar Hero series on the Nintendo Wii means that you can use it just the same way as the tie-in Guitar Hero controllers, and there is more!

For kids with smaller fingers, the Wii Dragon Wireless Guitar is set up with two sets of fret buttons. One of these sets of buttons is up at the top of the guitar neck in the same place as they are on the regular guitar controller that comes with the Guitar Hero games. The other set of buttons is about half the size, and they are located farther up the neck where it is easier for little kids to play. Kids and adults can rock out together with the Wii Dragon Wireless Guitar!

For the whole package, the Wii Dragon Wireless Guitar controller comes complete with a guitar strap, a pedal slot and a remote controller slot. A cool and unique shape divided down the middle between a standard Les Paul and a Gibson SG-1, along with a brilliant bright white finish, make the Wii Dragon Wireless Guitar visually interesting as well!

N64 Goldeneye Homebrew on the Nintendo Wii

The Virtual Console system on the Nintendo Wii has become one of the most popular features of the machine among retro gamers – recent hacks using the Virtual Console feature of the Wii have brought classic N64 games such as Mario 64 to the Wii even though they are not yet available over Nintendo’s online download service.

One of the latest hacks to appear for the Virtual Console is a homebrew version of Goldeneye! This hack is similar to other N64 hacks on the Virtual Console in that it essentially replaces an existing Virtual Console game – in this case, the game appears to be Sin and Punishment – with the emulator code and rom for an N64 game. A relatively new trick with this one is that the title that the Wii console displays for the game has also been edited to reflect Goldeneye instead of Sin & Punishment.

As can be seen from watching the videos of this Goldeneye hack, there are still some issues with frame rates – about every fifteen or twenty seconds there’s a slight jump in the frame rate and sound emulation, but with better N64 emulation on the Virtual Console being developed and Virtual Console hackers learning new tricks all the time, it’s only a matter of time before the Nintendo Wii gets a seamless Goldeneye homebrew.

With all of the excitement that the videos online have drummed up for this classic first person shooter, let’s hope that Nintendo picks up on it and comes out with an official Virtual Console release. Preferably, a Virtual Console version of Goldeneye which lets us play the beloved multiplayer mode over the Wii’s network connection! Such a game, if indeed it is released, would be sure to quickly turn into one of the best sellers on the Nintendo Wii’s revolutionary Virtual Console.

You can get this and loads more hacks up and running with the USB Gecko.

Have you done anything interesting while hacking the Wii? Leave a comment and let us know!

Newest Wii Firmware Incompatible with the Wii Freeloader

The Wii Freeloader makes it possible to play all kinds of import games from all over the world on the Nintendo Wii; however, the most recent update of the Wii system’s firmware (available via download from Nintendo) has been found to be incompatible with the Wii Freeloader. While the Wii Freeloader is designed to disable parts / elements of most Wii firmware updates which could affect it, the version 3.3 Wii Firmware which was released on 17/06/2008 prevents the Wii Freeloader from operating correctly.

For users of the Wii Freeloader, the easiest solution to keep the Wii Freeloader working is not to download and install the Wii Firmware 3.3 update. The Wii Freeloader is still compatible with all other versions of the Wii Firmware as indicated in its instruction packaging. Any kind of Wii Firmware from version 3.2 and below will run the Wii Freeloader perfectly so that you will be able to play games from any region without being blocked by the region controls on the Wii.

Most users of the Wii Freeloader will not be affected, and will be able to continue using their Wii Freeloader normally, so long as they do not download and install the 3.3 path to upgrade their Wii console’s firmware.

Also, keep in mind that when using the Wii Freeloader, the Wii Freeloader should be used for all games – not just import games. Some regional games will attempt to install additional firmware updates, and this can cause problems with compatibility. However, if you run all of your games through the Wii Freeloader, 99% of these attempted firmware changes will be caught and prevented. By using the Wii Freeloader for all of the games that you put into your Wii, and by not upgrading to the Wii firmware version 3.3, you can continue to make fine use of your Wii Freeloader.

Talismoon Wii Shells: Customize Your Wii's Colour

If you want to have a cooler looking Wii console, Talismoon has a wide range of game system accessories. Their Talismoon Wii shells replace the casing of the Wii to give you a different color, so if you don’t want to wait for Nintendo to release the new colors of Wii, you can get practically any color shell that you want.

The options available from Talismoon are Pink Chrome, Clear Blue, Blue Chrome, Red Chrome, Green Chrome, Clear Acrylic, Silver Chrome and Black Chrome. They all have cool names inspired from Japanese culture; for example, the red Wii shell is called Red Ronin, the black chrome shell is called Black Katana, and the clear acrylic shell is called Stealth Assassin.

In addition to looking cool, the Talismoon Wii shells provide some options which other shell casings for the Wii don’t, such as interchangeable DVD slot lights, letting you change the color of the indicator lights on the front of your Wii. The Talismoon Wii shells also have open panels in the back so that you have room for future upgrades to your Wii if you want to make changes which will require more rear connectors.

The cool colors in the Talismoon Wii shell line can be mixed and matched – use a body shell of one color for your Wii and another color for the base stand to achieve a unique effect. The Wii shells from Talismoon come with the tool kit, replacement feet, screw covers and everything else that you need to do the installation, so the setup will go smoothly without having to find any special screwdrivers or additional gear. All in all, the Talismoon Wii shells provide a great combination of personalized appearance for your Nintendo Wii while being very practical and protective for the Nintendo Wii’s hardware.

Have you pimped your Wii? Leave a comment and let us know!

Hot Rock Case for Wii - the Colour Changing Wii Mod

Cool looking case mods aren’t just for Xbox 360 or PS3 owners anymore! The Wii II-Case Replacement Shell Hot Rock Color Changing Case combines a cool LED light system with colors which are tied to the temperature of your system. At the 50 degree Celsius mark, the LEDs in the Hot Rock Case turn red, a powerful visual indicator of the heat inside the system as well as one of the most striking and attractive case mods that I’ve seen.

The colors that the Hot Rock Case Mod generates inside the Wii range from light blue at the lowest temperatures to red at the highest, running through blue, green, yellow and orange in between. Colors change only at every five degrees Celsius, while the numeric indicator on the case mod tells you the exact temperature.

The Hot Rock Case Mod for the Wii is simple to set up, and includes the unusual tri-wing screwdriver needed to open the Wii’s case so everything that you need is included with the set. This case mod is a welcome addition to the modding world and gives Wii owners a great way for them to give their favorite system a whole new look!

Wii Freeloader UK PAL Euro Instructions

The Wii Freeloader (£9.99) is a fantastic disc for playing import USA/JAP games on your UK Wii, but there are a few instructions you must follow to get it to work. See this guide for a step-by-step tutorial on how to play imported games on your Wii:

Loading a Game

  1. If the Game that you wish to play is from an NTSC region then you may need to first set the display setting to 60 Hz. This setting is found in the Tools Menu on your console.
  2. Insert the FreeLoader for Wii™ disk and it will automatically load and run.
  3. Multiple colour bars on the screen will indicate that FreeLoader for Wii™ is in operation. The colour bars will appear twice then the drive will stop.
  4. Eject the Freeloader disk and now insert the NTSC game that you want to play.
  5. The Game will play as normal.

Console/Firmware upgrades on Game Discs

Most games have an upgrade program which is loaded before the game application itself. The purpose of the upgrade program is to update your console, where necessary, with new firmware modules. When loading a game from another region on your console this upgrade program may have unpredictable results if loaded.

FreeLoader for Wii™ will automatically prevent this upgrade program from being loaded and will only load the main game application.

A number of games will not function unless the upgrade program has first been loaded and so FreeLoader has an alternate. See below for the selective alternative load method guide for these games.

Alternative method: For Games which require a firmware update

  1. Insert the FreeLoader for Wii™ disk and it will automatically load and run.
  2. Multiple colour bars on the screen will indicate that FreeLoader for Wii™ is in operation. The colour bars will appear twice then the drive will stop.
  3. Eject the Freeloader disk and then RE-INSERT / RE-LOAD the Freeloader disk once more.
  4. The multiple colour bars will appear twice more and the drive will again stop.
  5. Only after the Freeloader disc has been separately loaded twice, eject the Freeloader disc and now insert the Game Disc that you want to play. The Game will play as normal and this time the upgrade program will be selectively loaded.
CAUTION: Please be aware that allowing the upgrade program to run may, in a number of cases, still cause unwanted effects.

Since any game updates can create unwanted results or even incompatibility with Freeloader, it is recommended that all new games, even ones from your own region, are loaded via Freeloader’s alternative selective upgrade method.

Online Upgrades: A Warning

FreeLoader for Wii™ works with all current versions of Wii firmware at the time of its release (11/03/08).

No guarantee can be given of compatibility with future firmware releases so if Online Updates are performed on your console this may prevent Freeloader from functioning correctly.

We recommend that you consider the benefits of any Online Upgrade against the possible loss of compatibility with freeloader and its functions.

Has this helped you out? Let us know by leaving a comment!

Wii Freeloader Arriving Middle of March: Play All Import Games on Wii for £10.99

Datel have done it again: With the Wii Freeloader, play import Wii games on any Wii console. This means you can play USA Wii games on a UK Wii, Japanese games on a USA Wii or UK games on a Japanese Wii; any combination of regions you can think of, the Wii Freeloader will handle. Datel were previously rumoured to be working on it, but we're now (very) happy to announce it will be arriving in the second week of March at the low price of £10.99 - and it's available for pre-order now.

The confirmed release date is great news as the Wii is not yet known for it's vast library of games, and that number is diminished even further when you realise not every game is released in each region. Instead of waiting months for a UK release, you could play the USA Super Smash Brothers Brawl on your UK Wii right now. Even the hotly touted Wii Mario Kart is expected to debut in America long before it hits UK shores and we'll finally have access to the wide range of quirky Wii Japanese games that developers wouldn't dream of bringing over here.

Best of all, as no modificiation is required so it doesn't invalidate your warranty - and usage couldn't be easier! Just insert the Freeloader before the imported game you want to play, wait for the screen to load and then eject and swap for the intended game. It even works for Gamecube games as well, which opens up a huge back catalogue for the machine.

Region specific discs are a thing of the past as well with the new Wii Freeloader, all these Wii/Gamecube functions are performed from the one disc so no matter which Wii console you own, all you need is the Wii Freeloader. Are you as excited as we are? Leave a comment!

Pre-order it here for £10.99

Gamepointsnow.com - Game Points Now!

This hasn't been mentioned before, so I thought I'd give a shout out to our sister site Game Points Now, for all your instant Xbox/Wii Points needs. The premise is simple: you can buy Xbox, Wii and PSN points or subscriptions, pay by Paypal or credit/debit card and you'll instantly be sent your code by e-mail. No fuss, no muss.

It's mostly for European (UK) codes at the moment, but you can also pick up different flavours of Japanese PSN codes, which can be used on any region PS3 and provides a glimpse into the more hardcore and bizarre world of gaming. There's a lot on the Japanese network.

GPN is a handy way of getting points fast and for Xbox, saves your credit card being linked to your Gamertag, which then stops your 11-year-old cousin who doesn't understand that POINTS MEAN MONEY spending ludicrous amounts of cash on downloading tiny Gamertag icons for most of the English Premier League just so that his Gamertag picture matches his Pro Evo team of choice (and yes, this incident does form 99% of the inspiration behind the site). It also stops Microsoft auto-renewing your Gold account as well, and besides, we're cheap - cheaper than doing it through the Dashboard!

It's owned and staffed by the same people as The Game Train so you can trust you'll be getting a great service.

How to Use Opera on Your Wii With a Real Keyboard

Nintendo were nice enough to include an internet browser on the Wii in the guise of the open source Opera, so it's a shame then, that they expect you to use the Wiimote with an on-screen Virtual Keyboard. Using it is kinda like watching your Nan try to type, the way she uses one finger at a time and sometimes her hands shake so much she misses the right key. It can get pretty embarrassing in forums when your typos mean you're ROTLMAI-ing instead of ROTFLMAO-ing.

You can't just plug in a standard USB keyboard as it won't recognise it, nor a PS/2 keyboard with a USB-PS/2 converter.

There are a couple of solutions available, but unless you fancy taking a second mortgage out on your home and buying one of the super rare original Gamecube keyboards on eBay, there's only one practical way.

The Wii Keyboard Adapter lets you plug in standard PS/2 keyboards (the round type) into your Wii and use them as standard Gamecube keyboards, both in the browser and within supported Gamecube games. It's got some other pretty nifty functions too so check it out here, priced at just £9.99

Which Wii AV Cable Should I Buy?

When it comes to connecting the Wii to your TV, you've got a lot more options than simply using the composite cable that comes in the box. Though the composite cable is great for small Televisions, if you really want to get the most out of TV, it's worth upgrading.

It's important to realise: you can't use RGB Scart cables on a US/Japanese Wii and you can't use S-video on a UK Wii. This is true of all Wii cables and is due to limitations built into the consoles by Nintendo - there's no way around it. So here goes...

Wii Component Cable (£7.49)

If you have a HDTV with a component input (like the picture below), this is without doubt the best cable to have. The video signal is split over three separate cables to give a pin sharp image, and you can run your Wii in progressive scan at 480p.

Wii S-Video Cable (£6.99)

If you have a US or Japanese Wii and don't have a HDTV, the Wii S-Video Cable gives the best picture, superior to the default composite cable that comes with the console. This won't work on a UK/European console.

Wii RGB Scart Cable (£7.99 / £5.99)

If you have a UK Wii and no HDTV, the Wii RGB Scart Cable give a picture that's better than both the original composite cable and S-video. We offer two types of Wii RGB Scart cable, the Talismoon one includes separate red/white audio phonos so you can connect to speakers and a slightly cheaper version without the audio phonos:

Getting the Wii and the Mayflash Component to VGA Converter (YPbPr to RGBHV) to Play Together

Component to VGA transcoders are very useful devices. Amongst other things, they'll let you play your next get consoles on your PC screen in full HD glory.

To use the Mayflash 1080p Component to VGA Converter (YPbPr to RGBHV) box with your Nintendo Wii, you need to set your Wii to 480p progressive scan mode. Unfortunately, if you don’t have access to a HDTV it’s a little more tricky to set your Wii to display 480p.

Follow this tutorial and you’ll learn how to set your Wii to 480p mode without a HDTV so that it will work with a VGA converter on your monitor. This guide only needs to be done once:

1. Plug the component cable into the Wii

2. Plug the green plug from the component cable into the yellow phono input of a regular non-HDTV. This will give you a black and white screen from your Wii.

3. Navigate to the Wii Setup Menu.

4. Select ‘Screen Resolution’

5. Select 480p.

6. Insert the green plug, along with the other component cable plugs into the VGA Box

7
. Switch off the Wii.

8. Power the AC adapter on at the mains and connect your VGA cable to the VGA box and the PC monitor.

9. Enjoy 480p Wii games on your PC monitor!
